Watch 1066: The Battle for Middle Earth
(2009)Two episodes of the British television documentary series 1066: The Battle of Middle-Earth were released. The narrative of the crucial year of the Norman invasion of England is reimagined by Channel 4 in this hybrid historical drama and source material. The Domesday Book, Britain's earliest surviving public record, is where director Justin Hardy learned about the Sussex community of Crowhurst, which is the subject of the play. According to the book, this little settlement was "deserted" in 1066 and is about halfway between the coast and Hastings. It serves as the home base for Tofie, Leofric, and Odgar, three fictitious peasant troops. The name is the authentic Anglo-Saxon one used at that time.
