What to Know
American Psycho is a 2000 black comedy thriller directed by Mary Harron and screenplay by Harron and Guinevere Turner. This film is an adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' original novel and features Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, and other talented actors. It brings visual and sensory enjoyment to the audience and satires popular yuppie culture and consumerism in the 1980s. American Psycho follows Patrick Bateman's double life, as he appears to be an investment banking executive but is actually a serial killer.
Patrick Bateman is played by Christian Bale, one of America's most successful British actors. In the U.S., Bale has appeared in a series of superhero movies and is famous for portraying Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, in The Dark Knight and Batman Begins, and the role of the bloody serial killer Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. Bale is widely acclaimed for his outstanding performances in various productions, and he received an Academy Award for his role in The Fighter and two Golden Globe Awards for his roles in The Fighter and Vice.
Initially, Bret Easton Ellis doesn't think his novel is suitable for adapting because of some graphic and violent plot. However, director Mary Harron has a strong interest in adapting this work. She worked with Guinevere Turner and excised most of the novel's violent scenes, attempting to explore the influence and consequences of Bateman's murders through a blend of humor and horror. The production team aimed to depict a reflection of the era by portraying this monstrous killer.
