Watch Children of a Lesser God
(1986)Children of a Lesser God tells that James Leeds, a teacher with unconventional methods and a history of teaching at prestigious institutions, is assigned to teach at a school for the deaf on an island off the coast of New England. He is responsible for teaching a speech class to upper-grade students, and he quickly notices a young cleaning woman named Sarah Norman, who is deaf and has been at the school since the age of five. Sarah is headstrong, angry, and does not speak, and her troubled home life has caused her to distance herself from her family. Despite the school superintendent Dr. Curtis Franklin's reluctance to support Jim's efforts, he tries to help Sarah reach her full potential beyond being a cleaning woman. Jim believes that Sarah's silence is a choice and attempts to get her to learn how to speak. Although he cannot convince her to speak, they bond on a more humanistic level and eventually start a relationship. As they try to navigate their relationship, they face many challenges, including the divide between the hearing and deaf worlds, and Sarah's struggle to find her identity beyond being the "deaf girl." They question if there is a possibility for a long-term future together.
