synopsis

Mad Money tells that Don and Bridget Cardigan's comfortable lifestyle is at risk due to Don's prolonged unemployment and Bridget's lack of work experience. The couple faces a debt of $300,000 and Bridget realizes that she needs a job that offers benefits to support them. Reluctantly, she takes a job as a janitor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Bridget becomes fascinated with the old, worn-out money that is being shredded and concocts a plan to steal it in hopes of restoring their lifestyle. She recruits single mom Nina Brewster and trailer-dwelling Jackie Truman to help. Nina is hesitant until Bridget mentions that the money could provide a better education for her children. Jackie is easily convinced, but Nina warns Bridget that she will kill her if her children are endangered. As they execute the plan, it is complicated by the bank's head of security, Barry, who is attracted to Nina, Jackie's husband Bob's newfound wealth, Don's conservative morals, and Bridget's increasingly greedy motives. The plan ultimately threatens to tear the trio apart as they face numerous challenges to their scheme.
