synopsis

Murder in the First tells that Henri Young committed a theft of five dollars from a post office, leading him to be sent to the notorious Alcatraz prison. Despite attempting to escape, he failed and was subsequently confined to a dark, cold, and toilet-less dungeon for three years and two months. Milton Glenn, the assistant warden, had been granted unchecked power by his negligent superior and subjected Young to severe mistreatment, permanently injuring him with a straight razor. After his release from solitary, Young was placed among the general prison population, where he fatally stabbed another inmate with a spoon. Now, Young stands on trial for murder, facing the possibility of execution in the gas chamber. A determined and idealistic young lawyer, James Stamphill, takes on this seemingly impossible case and shockingly argues in court that Young had an accomplice. Stamphill asserts that the true culprit behind the murder was Alcatraz itself.
