Watch Paradox
(2018)"Paradox," directed by self-proclaimed "auteur" Darryl Hannah, takes viewers on a journey through picturesque landscapes while cinematographer Adam Vollick struggles to find his footing with the camera. The film features a performance by legendary rocker Neil Young and his band, who play cowboys. Despite moments of visual interest, the movie suffers from disjointed storytelling and heavy-handed pretense. It takes some time for the film to find its footing, but Neil and his band eventually provide a much-needed boost with their rendition of "Peace Trail." However, the respite is short-lived as Neil takes a beautiful song, "Pocahontas," and transforms it into a somber piece with a portable pipe organ. The rest of his score provides intrusive and bombastic background music to the scenic shots of skies, aspens, and grazing animals. Darryl Hannah presents her surreal vision in an 8 1/2 minute sequence of two cowboys flying above the tent where Neil and the band perform. Despite the beautiful visuals, the film struggles to cohesively tell its story.
