synopsis

In 1950s Hollywood, Joe Gillis, an unsuccessful screenplay writer with mounting debts, is considering returning to his hometown to work in an office. As he tries to escape from his creditors, he experiences a flat tire and decides to park his car in a run-down mansion located on Sunset Boulevard. It is there that he encounters Norma Desmond, the former star of silent films who lives in the mansion with her butler and driver, Max Von Mayerling. Norma, who is delusional and convinced of her imminent return to the film industry, is protected and isolated from the outside world by Max, her former husband, and director who still loves her. Norma offers Joe a place to stay in the mansion and enlists his help in writing a screenplay for her comeback to the cinema. Joe becomes Norma's lover and gigolo, but when he falls in love with Betty Schaefer, a young aspiring writer, Norma becomes jealous and descends into madness, leading to a tragic end.
