What to Know
The Fabelmans is an American teen film directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 2022. Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner co-write it. Starring Gabriel LaBelle in the main role and Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Judd Hirsch in supporting roles, the film is semi-autobiographical since it is loosely based on Spielberg's adolescence. Sammy Fabelman is a young and aspiring filmmaker who holds that movies are so powerful that they enable him to seek the truth in life and cure him in his dysfunctional family.
Spielberg created the film based on the memories of his parents in real life and conceived this work as early as 1999 when his sister Anne created a screenplay titled I'll Be Home. He polished the film's screenplay for almost 20 years and completed it in late 2020. The film started filming officially soon in July in Los Angeles and wrapped in September.
The Fabelmans received positive reviews and numerous nominations and awards; it earned seven nominations at the 95th Academy Awards and five at the 80th Golden Globe Awards. Compared with Spielberg's other classic movies, The Fabelmans underperformed at the box office. It grossed $45 million on a budget of $40 million. Besides this film also gets inspiration from a 2017 HBO documentary about Steven Spielberg.
