Watch The Great Debaters
(2007)The Great Debaters tells that in Marshall, Texas, known as the city that held out the longest after the Civil War, Wiley College becomes a beacon of inspiration in 1935-36. Professor Melvin Tolson, fueled by the Harlem Renaissance and his secret work as a union organizer, takes on the role of the debate team coach. Under his guidance, the team achieves an impressive record, almost undefeated, and makes history by participating in the first-ever debate between students from white and Negro colleges. Their journey culminates in a remarkable invitation to challenge the national champions from Harvard University. This team of four, including a female student and a young James Farmer, faces a series of trials in the crucible of a racially segregated society. They confront Jim Crow laws, sexism, threats from a lynch mob, an arrest leading to a near riot, a complicated love affair, feelings of jealousy, and the scrutiny of a national radio audience.
