synopsis

The King and I takes place in 1860s Thailand, known as the Kingdom of Siam at the time. Anna, a widow from England, enters the palace and becomes a teacher to the royal family. During her tenure, Anna frequently clashes with the King due to their differing perspectives. However, through these conflicts, Anna gradually comes to understand the King's seemingly eccentric behavior, and the King starts to accept Anna's modern Western way of thinking. Slowly, they grow closer. After a grand ball, the King learns that his consort and her lover have eloped. Enraged, the King orders their capture and cruelly executes them. It is at this moment that Anna realizes that some things are unchangeable, no matter what.
