Watch The Way We Were
(1973)The Way We Were depicts the complex and fluctuating relationship between Katie Morosky and Hubbell Gardiner over two decades, from the 1930s to the 1950s. They go from being strangers to acquaintances, friends, lovers, and even adversaries. The root of their unlikely relationship lies in their different backgrounds - she is a passionate, politically active Jewish woman with Marxist beliefs, while he is a privileged WASP who uses his advantages to his benefit. The film shows their lives in four distinct periods, starting with their college years, followed by their time in WWII New York City, Hubbell's career in Hollywood, and finally, his job as a television writer in New York. Hubbell discovers his passion for writing during college, and Katie sees beyond his charm to the person he is. Their relationship is affected by external events, such as WWII, the Spanish Civil War, and the House Un-American Activities investigation, but it is their personal relationships, including with Hubbell's friends J.J. and Carol Ann, that ultimately determine their fate as a couple.
