The Menu Plot

The Menu plot centers on a young couple, Margot Mills (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Tyler (Nicholas Hoult), who embark on a boat journey to reach Hawthorne, a secluded restaurant run by famous chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) on a private island. They are joined by other dinner guests, including food critic Lillian (Janet McTeer) and her editor Ted (Paul Adelstein), aging movie star George and his assistant Felicity, as well as business associates, along with Julian's troubled mother. But Margot was not the originally intended guest for the evening.

The dinner begins and Julian presents a series of courses accompanied by increasingly disturbing speeches about each dish. As the night progresses, the guests' secrets, including affairs and financial misconduct, are gradually exposed through conversations that ridicule class differences.

During the fourth course, a subordinate chef commits suicide in front of the diners, and another staff member amputates Richard's finger when he tries to flee. After the fourth course, the restaurant's primary investor, who was also the boss of Soren, Dave, and Bryce, is drowned in plain sight of the guests. Throughout the evening, Julian allows guests to attempt an escape, only for the staff to capture and return them.

Julian announced that all guests were chosen due to their negative impact on his love for his craft or because they profit from exploiting artisans like himself and his team. He warned that everyone present would meet their demise by the end of the night. Margot's presence being unexpected, Julian offered her a private decision - to die alongside the staff or with the other guests.

Margot's true identity as an escort named Erin is exposed. Richard had previously hired her and Tyler hired her for the evening's events. Julian reveals that Tyler was fully aware that the dinner would result in everyone's death and deliberately brought Margot, knowing she would meet her end. To further humiliate Tyler, Julian orders him to cook and insults his cuisine, causing Tyler to take his own life in the storage room. Julian then requests that Margot retrieve a barrel for dessert.

Margot sneaks into Julian's room and is confronted by Elsa, whom she kills in self-defense by stabbing her in the neck. After exploring Julian's office and discovering newspaper articles about his past, Margot locates a radio and calls for assistance. She then brings the barrel back to the restaurant. A Coast Guard officer arrives at the scene, but reveals himself to be a line cook in disguise before returning to the kitchen.

Margot belittles Julian's cuisine and expresses her hunger. Julian inquires what she would like to eat, to which she requests a cheeseburger and fries after seeing a photo of a youthful, content Julian working at a fast-food establishment. Touched by her straightforward request, Julian prepares the meal according to her liking. Margot takes a bite and commends the food, then requests it "to go". Julian packs it for her and, along with the staff, permits her to depart. Margot takes the nearby docked Coast Guard boat and flees the island.

The Menu marshmallow scene

The final course is a sophisticated version of s'mores - the staff spread crushed graham crackers on the floor and attire the guests with marshmallow capes and chocolate hats. Julian ignites the restaurant, causing the barrel to explode and resulting in the death of the guests, staff, and himself, while Margot observes from the boat and savors her take-out cheeseburger.
